Wounds of war

A Mt. Lake World War II veteran has lived with physical reminders of his service for almost 75 years. Dean Schied, who will celebrate his 101st birthday Nov. 28, was wounded twice in the Philippines. Shrapnel from the attacks remain lodged in his head and back after medical personnel deemed the fragments too risky to remove. He was involved in the war effort stateside, but didn’t feel he was doing enough, so he signed up to serve and was shipped overseas.
